"In their series, Scenes of Life, Lucie and Simon present moments we're all familiar with: a breakfast, a nap on the sofa, a swim in a pool. All of the mundane clutter of everyday life is there in abundant and clear detail. What gives the viewer a real jolt of delight, however, is that all of this is seen from directly overhead, looking straight down -- a seemingly impossible perspective, especially for the photographs made inside the rooms of their home.

The peaceful, hovering point-of-view is reminiscent of scenes from Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire,  where we share the delight of seeing things through an angel's eyes  from on high. Or perhaps it's the feeling one would have in a pleasant  out-of-body experience, looking down on oneself, disembodied, floating,  detached, removed, above all the hubbub.

We're simultaneously given a voyeuristic look inside a private moment —  and challenged to unravel the technical feats necessary to pull off a  series of work like this.

"…a journey travelling with a pencil, paper and a pair of scissors…

As a paper artist my work currently focuses on the reinvention of  entomological cataloguing, display and the assemblage of shapes. I am  fascinated with the process by which three-dimensional decorative forms  materialise out of flat sheets of paper. By deconstructing various paper  ephemera I create unique works of art.

The delineation of these forms within the ethos and methods of my  work requires an absolute labour of love, where repetition has always  been notable and each piece is composed of hundreds if not thousands of  profiles.

Each shape is hand drawn and then intricately hand cut from carefully  selected paper, focusing on recycling a medium that would otherwise be  discarded and lost. I dissect small details of colour, imagery and text  into silhouettes that are then re-sculptured, pinned and encased. My aim  is to transform an every day object into a piece of work that invites  the viewer to see beyond its original source."

I love the fact that each of these items have had so many lives.

The lives with their many owners,

and then a life in the theatre - being part of sets of every era,

owned by many characters, seen by many audiences.

"Apparently, zebra finches (above) understand 

that it's not about the  coloring or the shape 

of a potential mate's tail feather, but how one  shakes it. 

A research conducted by a team from University of Exeter, Carleton University, Royal Veterinary College, and University of London has found that adventurous female zebra finches choose mates with similar personalities, regardless of the birds' size or physical features. This is the first study to show that the non-sexual behavior or personalities of both mates influences partner choice in non-humans.

By setting up behavioral tests for more than 150 zebra finches, the team discovered that females who are willing to explore new environments are more likely to spend time with similarly outgoing and confident males. In the experiment, each female watched a pair of brothers exploring strange cages, one of which was made to look less exploratory by restraining it in an invisible box. The females were then put together with the brothers, where the team observed which male the females were more likely to favor. While the more adventurous female finches preferred the bold male birds, the less exploratory females didn't show a preference for either.

Team leader, Dr. Sasha Dall of the University of Exeter said: "This is strong evidence that females care about the apparent personality of their male independently of his appearance. We have the first evidence that it is important for partners to have compatible personalities in the mating game. This is something we would probably all agree is the case for humans but which has been overlooked for other species."

On Saturday night I had the real privilege

of joining birthday celebrations for

Paper Rock Scissors

along with The Big One and Spaghetti Arms,

at The Barking Dog restaurant

P.R.S. actually introduced it to me last year

and I have been back quite a few times since

The atmosphere there is always so much fun,

(helped along by good company

and a couple of bottles of wine ... of course ...)

candlelight and good music,

and the decor is quirky and tasteful without trying too hard

- they manage to strike a really good balance

Despite the late hour,
I opted for the delicious steak and chunky chips

and champagne jelly with berries and ice cream

I think I might be back.

Back to blogging.

I'm not really sure what happened.

I didn't mean to be away for so long,

time just lost the run of itself.

The bizarre thing is that the longer I was away

from Hawk&Fallow, the more I missed it.

It was like a friend I knew I should contact but just couldn't and then the longer it went on the more I felt bad for not contacting instead of just picking up the phone.

I do that an awful lot actually.

I have a lot of news I suppose, but I'll let it filter through.

I was on tour with Dunsinane for ten weeks and then I went to the windy city Chicago for ten days for a little holiday.

I feel like there have been changes,

and there are more to come.

It feels a bit uncomfortable but necessary.

it all felt a bit like a treasure hunt adventure

Yesterday, I was back down to London briefly
for some music rehearsals.

We were working in some studios in Stoke Newington,
also home to some very interesting artists.

I picked up this flyer ...

"Chin Keeler and Emma Tornero work  collaboratively. They trade ideas and thoughts to break through to a  common goal, suspending their individual artistic vision and  preconceived ideas in an animated dialogue of polar styles. Both work on  the same piece at the same time, intuitively sourcing imagery or  deliberating on a concept or theme, negotiating spontaneity and intent,  fusing Chin's immediacy with Emma's precision.
  
They describe their  collaborative experience as 'scary, uncomfortable, frustrating but  ultimately rewarding and exciting', and in this way they create images  in which the impossible emerges as something perfectly natural, making  their chaotic disregard for reality as plausible as ordered  representation."

 What an amazing creative process.
It is always encouraging to hear that other artists continue
to find themselves in that initial state of fear
when they embark upon a new project,
but that they always emerge safely on the other side.
I have huge respect for those who are willing
to take that first step, over and over again.
It is extremely encouraging.

It is not often that one will find a post relating to

But, yesterday, I found myself on a bike ride.

And not just a gentle one to a nice cafe for lunch, non.

A 30 mile bike ride.

THIRTY. MILES.

Along with three other cast members,

I found myself cycling from Edinburgh, through the stunning countryside, to West Linton.

It was amazing.

A real challenge which I was extremely proud to complete.

A highlight of the day was stopping off for a little glass of something delicious

at the wonderful Linton Books

run by 'Uncle' Derek

and I even purchased a little collection called

'The Poetry of Birds'

which we performed in January 2010,

is now on tour to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stratford upon Avon.

What a delight.
Three new places to discover.

I have been to Edinburgh a few times, but never for this long

(six whole weeks)
and so there is much adventure to be had
(in between rehearsals and performances that is)

I intend to squeeze every last drop out of this beautiful city.

Yesterday I had some time off and explored the Old Town,

Victoria street and Grassmarket.

I happened upon the most wonderful place -

a treasure trove of beautiful heart melting things

Here is an excerpt of her writing, talking about one of the many characters she met ...

Love in Store

"A mist covers the river as the sun comes up, I meet a woman called Dr Love. She tells me it is her mission to spread love and soften people’s hearts. Afterwards I go into an antique shop, the owner is called Robert. He is smoking and mending a broken table. He tells me people are getting bigger these days and chairs keep breaking. He has rows of tools and a letter addressed to him with Mother Theresa stamps stuck on, there is a smell of something cooking. He takes us out for a drive to a forgotten church that he takes care of. Light pours in and he gives us bourbon, ice rattles in the plastic glass. Later we drive twenty miles to eat dinner with his girlfriend. We sit on the porch while she cooks and he asks me if i have a man and is he supportive. I say I do and he is. He says he would be too, that he wouldn’t mind if a girl travelled and followed her passions. I say for some people it’s a problem. He says of course and that any man who says otherwise is lying. The next day he gives me a Indian arrowhead carved out of rose crystal."

I keep reading the nine short stories included in the article.

Over and over. They are so powerful.

And all at once I am anxious.

Bordering on terrified. But only bordering.

Got to keep moving. Foot in front of the other.

Smile at people. You are only one amongst many.

Do not allow their minutiae to repulse.

Don't study their faces too closely,

their hair, pores, glistening folds of skin.

Their smell. Don't dwell on their smell.

Be it a nice one or one of a days work,

a days thoughts, steps and battle.

Impatience seeps through. Just get there.

Are all these stages necessary? Patterns aggravate.

Self conscious movements. No one is actually looking at you.

Hair tied back tightly. Red lips. Checked shirt buttoned to the top. Coat swinging.

The track on my headphones is one of grit and filth

and 'yeah that's right - remember me?'
And I feel the familiar seed rapidly sprouting in the pit of my stomach. With ivy strength it spreads through.

Adrenaline. Butterflies on acid.

I read of photographers and their ingenuity, actresses and their journeys, designers and their muses.

My stomach soars. I feel the tears behind my eyes.

I want. I can.

I want to take my belt off and stand up and laugh aloud.

I am full of power and courage and talent and I can.

I can. I can.

I will wear a scarf in my hair tomorrow.

Why didn't I wear a bow tie today?

Must look into short stories.

Write a short film. A silent one.

Write that other thing about that woman.

And start that script about the family.

And what about that idea you had about the umbrellas?

And you should really learn to sketch.

And I know already

- still in the midst of the throes -

this too shall pass.

I have been here before.

The butterflies will wilt with exhaustion.

Their wings battered by the constant movement.

And I will lay in a dark room tonight attempting to locate the ivy seeds that are now buried deep.

Somewhere in the filth and soil that resumes and consumes.

To amuse myself on the tube I often try to work passengers out according to their shoes.

Weird?

Maybe, but I think you can tell a lot about someone by their footwear.

A bit like how I always like to visit the bathroom in
